Faraway island waves
Rust-colored ocean calm
Sepia clouds flow past – where could they be going?
I chased after a shadow-picture fox; my dreams from those days
inside my breast even now – going to the west
Oh, where in Japan
is the person waiting for me?
Departure on a fine day, inside the wind once more
I can hear them even now, the songs of those days traveling beside me
Is the fireflies’ light the bonfire from those faraway days?
And the scenery faintly seen a heat haze shimmering?
When I give up both meetings and partings to the twilight
I’ll go search for my own shadow – going to the west
Oh, where in Japan
is the person waiting for me?
Departure on a fine day, inside the wind’s morning colors
I can hear them even now, the songs of those days traveling beside me
Oh, where in Japan
is the person waiting for me?
Departure on a fine day
My yearning is inside the wind
I can hear them even now, the songs of those days traveling beside me

Song info: West Japan Railway Company's "Discover
the West" advertising campaign song, written by Shinji Tanimura, an
ex-member of a famous jpop band called "Alice." This song used to be
sung in 1978 by Momoe Yamaguchi, a legendary female pop star who
fascinated the whole country. The lyrics were changed almost entirely
for this recording. Recorded early in September 2003, just before
Chihiro
had throat surgery.
