animefest 2004 report
AnimeFEST! 2004 was September 3-6, 2004, and reverting back to my usual Animefest tradition, I only went on Saturday. The reason for this was because the weekend earlier had been move-in and freshman orientation for college, and even though I still planned to come home this weekend (it's only an hour away), I didn't want to mess with a hotel room and all that stuff--plus, I wanted to save money. My sister had, however, found a room to stay in.. I don't know who all was in her room, but it was good that we had SOMEplace to put our stuff so we didn't have to carry it around all day. Quite a few traditional Animefest attendees (Eryn, Ashley, Allison, etc) were also unable to come this year too, because their colleges were considerably farther away and they couldn't come back that weekend. Sad face. But Elsa came back, so she and I went, along with her sister Rita and her cousin Randy.

Saturday

I slept in until 10 or 11, then Elsa called.. and kept calling for the next hour telling me to hurry up (T_T First she said I could eat and shower, then noooo, hurry up!). Eventually her dad just came and picked me up. Her cousin Randy came with us too. We went to the Arapaho Center DART station (which, by the way, is really cool, because you have to go through this TUNNEL THING to get to the station from the parking lot!) and then rode through like 15 stations (and a few mix-ups about where we were going >.>) before finally arriving at Union Station and walking to the Hyatt Regency hotel. Man, what a nice hotel. For once, a GOOD con-hotel change. I'm definitely glad they started using this one. It's just the right size, not humongously I-can't-find-any-of-my-friends-EVER large like some hotels we could mention (cough, Adam's Mark). And it's so nice! The bathrooms in the hotel rooms are really nice and fancy, and the beds have wooden bedframes. Very nice.

Omg it's Ryan! XDAnyway, so we got there and went up to Bekah's room. Luckily there were people there to let us in! Ryan (kimcicle) and Bekah's LJ friend Lizzie. So then we all went downstairs, and Elsa, Randy and I bought our Saturday-only badges, which were cool and laminated and not the usual one-day cheapo sticker things. :D And then we headed towards the dealer's room, and on the way I saw Erin from AC! And she showed me the stuff she got and she told me how all the rest of Ali's friends were too lazy to come down to Afest with her ^_~ And she told me where to find these really cute CCS figurines. Then she went on her way, and we hit up the dealer's room! Agh. I always say "Oh, I don't want to buy anything so I won't bring that much money." And then I spend everything I brought!! Oh well. Loot:

Sailor Venus keychain (so cute. I think it's based on PGSM Venus, too, although the eyes look manga-like. V. cool)
KINGDOM HEARTS CHAIN OF MEMORIES POSTER (:DDDDDD Soooo goin up in my dorm. This poster ROCKS)
3 pins ("T_T", "yaoi", and "Hentai" with a red crossout no symbol over it [like the no-smoking symbol]... heeee all very amusing. Those pins were great. Others said "omg," "Your costume/webcomic/online journal/fanfic blows," "Emo Queen" with the Dairy Queen logo.. so great)
HAHAHA AWESOME CAT PLUSHIE THING (it's this cat head poking out of a round red ball, and then there's a fishing line with a fish on the end, which has a magnet that matches the cat's mouth. SO YOU GO FISHING WITH IT!!! Believe me, it is the most amusing thing everrrr.)
Birthday present for Chloe/gracefulstars: The set of 5 CCS figurines recommended by Erin :D

'Charlie' Angelika marquee by Mockingbird StationThen we all decided we were hungry, so Bekah, Steph, Elsa, Kevin (yay Kevin!), Randy, and Elsa's sister Rita (who got there later) and I walked down to the DART station. On the way I saw Zack!! :D Perhaps I hugged him for a little too long but I really don't like that I rarely get to see him, and other people like Stephen and Kerry. :/ Oh well. Anyway, we rode the DART down to Mockingbird and ate at Cafe Express. Mmmm yummy :D Of course, that took like 2 hours, and by the time we got back, the dealer's room had closed. Oh well. From there, we got in line for the Max concert, since we didn't have anything else to do. OMFG I was about to kill the con security (AKA "line Nazis") that were powertripping allllll up and down that damn line. First it was "get in a single file line" and if we My daring picture of Lizzie in lineDARED to sit down Indian-style they'd make us move. Then we got bitched at for like 15 minutes about how no one could take pictures inside or they'd get booted from the con. I flagrantly decided to keep my camera with me, only inside my purse, so I wouldn't have to run back up to the room afterwards and get it. While in line, in a DARING VIOLATION OF CON RULES, I took out said camera to take pictures of Elsa, Kevin, and Lizzie in line. Security Nazi Dude zeroes in on the presence of a CAMERA!!11 and the following ensues:

Nazi Dude: You know, you really shouldn't take that into the concert with you. Do you have a room or somewhere where you can put it?
[Okay, like 10 minutes ago they had said we could take cameras in as long as they stayed in our bags, and now this guy is telling us we can't even do that?]
Me: Uh, they just said we could keep them in our bags as long as we don't take any pictures during the concert.
Him: I know, but they might be checking bags or whatever. And if you use it to take a picture, we'll see the flash and you'll get kicked out.
[Okay, we've been told this TEN MILLION TIMES BY NOW! Besides, why the hell would I want to take a picture if I know it'll get me kicked out? T_T]
Me: *sarcastically* Oh, well, as much as I really want to get kicked out... I think I can keep it under control.
Him: Okay (not seeming to get the sarcasm)

Yeah, somehow I couldn't fully transcribe his uber-bitchiness, but man, that guy really pissed me off. He's the same one who, when the line started to move, treated us like brainless cattle by saying "Okay, people, it's not that hard!" when, uh, everyone looked like they were moving along juuust fiine. And he also barked at Bekah about "elevator etiquette!" when she and Steph tried to get onto an elevator that was only partially full. Ugh. I didn't understand why Shin K and people were complaining about the security at cons, but now I know. They don't know how to do their job AND not act like assholes. "It's not that hard, people!"

So, finally we got into the concert. It was opened by Kumiko Katou (I think that's how you spell her name).. who was, to put it plainly, a ho. Ho, ho, ho. She had a belly-baring top and a little skirt, and gyrated all over that stage. Her songs weren't that good, either. Strangely enough, we realized that the first two rows of the auditorium were completely full of fanboys. It was hilarious. Anyway, Ms. Katou finally finished, and Max came on!!! :D Yay, they were really good. Haha, they were all wearing different-colored dresses, so they looked like the girls on the Fanta commercials. Hee. They did a lot of cool songs, INCLUDING a Japanese cover of "Larger Than Life" by the Backstreet Boys! Haaaahahahahhaa wth wth. So great.

Heeeehee the picture of BekahThen after the concert was over, we just kind of chilled with everyone until these guys told us about the "secret rave" being held on the third floor terrace, unbeknownst to the con. So we went up there, and there was music, but no one was dancing. There were these cool yellow lights, though, so I tried to take some cool pictures.. there's one of Bekah that's very amusing, hee. Awhile later we heard that the police or whoever were coming to break it up (apparently people were smoking pot and whatever up there -_-) so we left. Blah blah, wandered around, until Elsa and I collected Randy and Rita and rode the DART back to Garland. Yay :D

Wow. It may be just because I only went for one day, but WOW, Animefest was so fun. Or perhaps I am just comparing it to A-kon, which really, anything could be good after that disastrous occasion. And because I only went for one day (and even last year, Saturday was the fun day) so I didn't really have time to get mired in any drama or get bored with the con or whatever. So all in all, got some cool stuff, hung out with some people I hardly see, and generally had a good time. Good job, Animefest!
