akon 16 report
Akon 16 was June 3-5, 2005, and held at the same Adam's Mark hotel as last year's. If I were to sum up this year's con experience for me in one word, it would be "meh." Not that I had a bad time, it was nowhere near the suckfest that last year's Akon was for me, oh man. I mean, Friday was pretty awesome. But as my friend Areli said, overall it was just ":/". I didn't have a room, it was too crowded, I didn't feel all that great, so blah blah I'm thinking about not coming back next year. Not in a "OMG U ALL SUCK I'M LEAVING" way, no no, just "meh... I'm sick of doing this and wasting money on it to boot." Akon has gotten too huge and its just not worth it. Me and Bekah were talking about it.. there HAVE to be cheaper ways to see people and friends from other cities. And then I was thinking on my own, about how a con is just a huge economic opportunity for everyone to make money off you. The hotel makes money, the con makes money, the dealers make money (especially those who exploit the recent boom in yaoi-love; yaoi merchandise is EVERYWHERE, and it almost makes me sick how many fangirls fall for it and buy the shitty "I <3 Yaoi" tshirts and crap, when they're just part of an economic scheme) and what do you get? The once-in-a-lifetime chance to wade among smelly crowds, trying desperately to contact your scattered group of people via cellphone, and generally being annoyed by the idiocy of most fans, all in the name of "getting together with people who share your interests." Fuck that. The only reason I go now is to see if the dealers room has any CDs I want and to see people from other cities. But again, there HAS to be a cheaper way to do that, and one that doesn't make me feel like I'm just being exploited because I like/used to like anime. bah.

Friday night, again, was the best, though, mainly for one reason: Rocky Horror. Hell yeah. It was good last year, and it was 10 times as good this year. Scarlett (who rocks! And likes Wicked!) and I ogled the hot Rocky (oh man...!!) and it was just overall good times. Rocky and Frank totally made out gratuitously, which was hilarious and awesome. And just about everyone actually fit their roles (yay, no female Brad like last year!) and did a good job. And we met some cool people in line, which always happens, doesn't it? We played cards with them while waiting, haha. After it was over I wandered around with Bekah. We were just chillin in the eurobeat dance when Angelo randomly showed up!! He came running up to me, and we went outside to talk but then he insisted on CARRYING ME INSIDE. XDDD It was so hilarious. And then Scarlett and I played Super Speed and chatted until I left around 3 a.m.

Saturday is kind of a 'why did I bother coming back' day. Nothing much really happened. Chilled with Kristy and Areli though, which was cool, and the taiko drum group who performed at AC a couple of months ago were there, which amused me. Missed Hentaifest, which kind of sucked, I wanted to be amused, but oh well. Hung out with Delaney, who is hilarious. Went home at midnight, thank god.

Other than that, I saw just about everyone from out of town and in-town that I hadn't seen in forever, which was cool. I didn't have a room, so Steph and Jabe took me home Friday and Saturday night and then crashed at my house cause of the continued parental absence, which was fun. I only bought one thing in the dealers room, the second issue of Clamp no Kiseki (on "sale" for $28), and thus only spent money on that, food, and my badge. Hell yes, cheapest Akon so far.

In conclusion, Akons just haven't been the same since the Total Greatness that was Akon 14. And cons in general just don't do it for me anymore. This isn't even really a huge report like I used to make in the past, and I put off posting it here on the site for a long time. Besides, I hardly even take pictures of costumes and put them up here anymore anyway. And thats fine, really. I'm on my way out of this. Once again, "meh"!
